Heart Hat WG20 SO8 by Elizabeth Zimmermann

Heart Hat WG20 SO8

Pattern description from Knitting Workshop: “The HEART HAT is knitted in garter-stitch and bordered by I-CORD. It also has ties made with I-CORD.”

Materials: 3-4 ounces of wool. 16” circular needle (work in garter-stitch back-and-forth) of a size to give you the above GAUGE.

This pattern may be found in the appendix to Knitting Workshop on pages 155-156. There is a photo on page 107. This pattern is also available in Vogue Knitting, Holiday 1988 as “Have a Heart - Hearthat.”

The pattern gives the size for this hat as “adult.” As with many of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s patterns, the directions for this hat are brief and include suggestions for calculating modifications in size. The pattern is featured in Piecework, Mar/Apr 1999 as “A Heart Hat for Baby”, using two strands of Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece in two colors. 18 sts/36 rows=4” in garter stitch.

  • These instructions are for making an ingenious knitted heart, which can be used as an elbow patch (for which it was originally conceived by EZ,) or pocket. It is expanded into a pattern for a knit bonnet-style hat, in which the heart is used for the back of the head.

The “hearthat”: An endearing use of the knitted heart. It’s accomplished by picking up the edge stitches and working back and forth from the point.
