The Barred Owl, popularly known as the “Hoot Owl,” inhabits large wooded areas in the eastern United States, Canada, and parts of the Pacific Northwest. Its call is often transcribed as “who cooks for you? who cooks for you-all?” When it isn’t hooting, it loves cooking!*

Pattern requires 3 colors of yarn, but you’ll need less than half a ball of CC1 and CC2. You can make fraternal twins!

Skills required: slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and embroidered chain stitch.

Depending on your row gauge for the popcorn sections, the front and back of the owl’s body may be slightly different lengths when you join them together. If they’re pretty close, I suggest joining them stitch-for-stitch as in the pattern since the popcorn section is quite flexible. If they are significantly different lengths, you can use a different hook size or add or subtract rows from the single-crochet sections. Just be aware that you’ll need to occasionally skip a stitch from one side or the other when you’re joining the front and back.
