Technique: Regular Crochet

Size

Approximately 52″ x 68″

Materials

  • Crochet Hook: H(or sizes to obtain gauge)
  • Approx. 72 oz. Red Heart Supersaver – Warm Brown
  • Yarn needle (for weaving ends)

Notes

Always count the turning ch as the first stitch of the row, except on the border.

Gauge

Worked in pattern, first 5 rows = 2″
Worked in pattern, one weave (3 post stitches) = 1″ across

Special Stitches

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc): YO. Insert hook from front to back on the right side of the dc. Going around the post of the dc, insert hook from back to front on the left side of the dc. Continue working dc normally.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPdc): YO. Insert hook from back to front on the right side of the dc. Going around the post of the dc, insert hook from front to back on the left side of the dc. Continue working dc normally.

Reverse Single Crochet (Rev sc): For reverse stitches, you will be working in the opposite direction than you would normally. For right handers, insert your hook in the next stitch to the right and complete your single crochet. Continue working to the right. For left handers, work in the opposite direction.

Instructions

Row 1: Ch 174. Dc in the fourth ch from hook and each ch across. Ch 2, turn. (172 dc, counting the first skipped ch-3 as the first dc)

Rows 2-3: Sk the first stitch. Hdc in the next st. * Work FPdc around each of next 3 sts. Work BPdc around each of the next 3 stitches. Rep from * to within last 2 sts. Work hdc in each of next 2 sts (the ch-2 from the previous row is considered to be the last st). Ch 2, turn.

Rows 4-5: Sk the first stitch. Hdc in the next st. * Work BPdc around each of next 3 sts. Work FPdc around each of the next 3 stitches. Rep from * to within last 2 sts. Work hdc in each of next 2 sts (the ch-2 from the previous row is considered to be the last st). Ch 2, turn.

Repeat Rows 2-5 until piece measures approximately 64″, ending with either a Row 3 or a Row 5. Fasten off.

Border:

Row 1: Join yarn to any corner on the front side of the work. Ch 1. Work 3 sc in same corner. Sc evenly around entire afghan, with 3 sc in each corner. Sl st to beg sc. DO NOT cut. DO NOT turn.

Rows 2-4: Ch 1. WORKING IN BACK LOOPS ONLY, work sc around entire piece, with 3 sc in each corner. Sl st to beg sc. DO NOT cut. DO NOT turn.

Row 5: Ch 1. Reverse sc around entire afghan, with 2 reverse sc in each corner. Sl st to beg ch. Fasten off. Weave in all ends carefully and securely.
