Unfortunately there is an error in my pattern in the Vampire Knits Book. The “cast on” line was not part of my original pattern at all. :( The editors changed around alot of the phrasing in my pattern. They made the pattern more vague such as Work for 2 inches rather than stating to work 12 rows. I try to be more specific in my patterns so that the knitter doesn’t have to think about it. That is my style that I am quite proud off. Check out my Bella’s Eclipse cardigan for another example.
I wish I had gotten the chance to proof-read it first, since it does have my name on it and the thumb part was what made it unique to all the other Alice mit patterns. The whole process has been alittle disappointing. I should have keep it for free. Sorry All. Oh well, Lesson learned.

So in my pattern:
Row 17: K15, bind off 12sts, remove markers, K14. 30sts

To bind off 12 sts you must work into 13 sts, so the last stitch remains and you do not have to cast one on over the gap. I think the editor got confused because this is how it would be done if you slipped the stitches off so that you could later knit more of a thumb. So if you would like to add more thumb coverage you can do this however, you will have slip all 13 stitches off to a stitch holder before knitting them, then cast on 1 and connect to the other side. After the top of the mitten is finished go back and knit a few more rows onto the thumb.

I hope this helps. Happy Knitting Nancy
