Jan Lace Baby Dress

Please note: UK crochet terms are used throughout this pattern. UK double crochet = US single crochet, UK treble = US double crochet and so on.

Materials and Size

Patons Nimbla Knitting Wool

19″ underarm – 4 balls

Length from top of shoulder – 17″

Length of sleeve from underarm 2 ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos 11/3mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Four Small Buttons.

Crochet Hook UK No 12/2.75mm/US C-2

Floss for Embroidery.

1½ Yards Ribbon.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 9 stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch.

Pattern

The Front

Using No. 11 Needles, cast on 152 stitches.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows once.

5th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, rep from * to end of row.

6th row: Like 2nd row.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.

With right side of work facing, and using a fine spare needle, pick up 152 sts along cast-on edge, place at back of needle in use.

11th row: Knit plain, knitting together one st from each needle to form a hem.

12th row: Like 2nd row.

Proceed as follows:

** 1st row: K2, * (yo, K1) twice, slip 1, K1, psso, K3, K2tog, K1, rep from * to end of row.

2nd and alt rows: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: K2, * yo, K3, yo, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K1, K2tog, K1, rep from * to end of row.

5th row: K2, * yo, K5, yo, K1, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K1, rep from * to end of row.

7th row: * Slip 1, K1, psso, K3, K2tog, K1, (yo, K1) twice, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

9th row: * Slip 1, K1, psso, K1, K2tog, K1, yo, K3, yo, K1, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

11th row: * Slip 1, K2tog, psso, K1, yo, K5, yo, K1, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

12th row: K1, purl to last st, K1. **

Rep. from ** to ** eleven times.

Using No. 12 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K2, (K2tog) twenty times, K2, (K2tog) fifteen times, K4, (K2tog) fifteen times, K2, (K2tog) twenty times, K2. (82 sts).

2nd row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 2nd row twice.

5th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to last 2 sts, yo, K2tog

6th row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 6th row twice.

Using No. 11 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.

7th row: Cast off 4 sts, knit plain to end of row.

8th row: Cast off 4 sts, purl to last st, K1.

9th row: Cast off 3 sts, knit plain to end of row.

10th row: Cast off 3 sts, purl to last st, K1.

11th row: Cast off 2 sts, K3, * (yo, K1) twice, slip 1, K1, psso, K3, K2tog, K1, rep from * to last 3 sts, K3.

12th row: Cast off 2 sts, purl to last st, K1.

13th row: K3, * yo, K3, yo, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K1, K2tog, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.

14th and alt rows: K1, purl to last st, K1.

15th row: K8, yo, K1, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K1, * yo, K5, yo, K1, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K1, rep from * to last 11 sts, yo, K5, yo, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K3.

23rd row: K2, K2tog, K1, * (yo, K1) twice, slip 1, K1, psso, K3, K2tog, K1, rep from * to last 11 sts, (yo, K1) twice, slip 1, K1, psso, K7.

25th row: K7, yo, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K1, K2tog, K1, * yo, K3, yo, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K1, K2tog, K1, rep from * to last 12 sts, yo, K3, yo, K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K6.

27th row: K8, yo, K1, slip 1,
K2tog, psso, K1, * yo, K5, yo, K1, slip 1, K2tog, psso, K1, rep from * to last 13 sts, yo, K5, yo, K1, slip 1, K1, psso,
K5.

28th row: K1, purl to last st, K1. ***

29th row: Knit plain.

Rep. 28th and 29th rows three times, then 28th row once.

In next row: K26, cast off 14 sts, K26.

Continue on last 26 sts as follows:

1st row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Cast off 3 sts, knit plain to end of row.

3rd row: Like 1st row.

Rep. 2nd and 3rd rows twice.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 9 sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row.

Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge, and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front to ***·

Continue in stocking stitch without shaping, until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 9 sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 17 sts, turn.

5th row: Work to end of row.

Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 50 stitches.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows once.

5th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, rep from * to end of row.

6th row: Like 2nd row.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.

With right side of work facing, and using a fine spare needle, pick up 50 sts along cast on edge, place at back of needle in use.

11th row: Knit plain, knitting together one st from each needle to form a hem.

12th row: Like 2nd row.

13th row: K14, *inc once in next st, rep from * to last 14 sts, K14. (72 sts)

14th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Using No. 11 Needles, work as given from ** to ** for Front, once.

Continue in stocking stitch, dec once at each end of needle in next and every alt row, until 58 sts remain, then in every row, until 20 sts remain.

Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Front Neckband

With right side of work facing, and using No. 12 Needles, knit up 38 stitches evenly round front of neck.

1st row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Knit plain.

3rd row: Like 1st row.

4th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice. Cast off.

The Back Neckband

With right side of work facing, and using No. 12 Needles, knit up 32 stitches evenly across back of neck.

1st row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Knit plain.

3rd row: Like 1st row.

4th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.

Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew up shoulder seams for 1 an inch.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Fold neckbands in half and sew in position on wrong side.

Using Crochet Hook, work 2 rows of dc along shoulder openings, making 2 button loops on each front shoulder in 2nd row.

Sew on buttons to correspond with loops.

Embroider with grub roses. Finally, press all seams.
