This layette consists of a hooded cape, frock (dress), vest, modesties (soakers), and booties

Please note: UK crochet terms are used throughout this pattern. UK double crochet = US single crochet, UK treble = US double crochet and so on.

The Cape

Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Lady Betty 3 ply

The Cape and Hood

19 – 20 inch underarm – 4 balls

Length from top of shoulder, 17 ins.

Width all round face, 11½ ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 14/2mm/US 0

Crochet Hook UK No 12/2.75mm/US C-2

Embroidery floss or silk for embroidery.

Three Small Buttons.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch

Pattern

The Cape

Using No. 10 Needles cast on 289 stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st row seven times.

Proceed as follows:

** 1st row: (K1, P1) four times, K2, * K2tog, yo, knit into previous row of next st, (this will now be termed “Knit Below” throughout) , yo, K2tog tbl, K1, rep from * to last 9 sts, K1, (P1, K1) four times.

2nd row: (K1, P1) four times, purl to last 8 sts, (P1, K1) four times.

3rd row: (K1, P1) four times, knit plain to last 8 sts, (P1, K1) four times.

4th row: Like 2nd row. **

Rep. from ** to ** forty-one times, then from ** to 3rd row once.

In next row, (K1, P1) four times, P9, * P2tog, P20, rep from * to last 8 sts, (P1, K1) four times. (277 sts)

Proceed as follows:

1st row.(K1, P1) five times, * K2tog, P1, K1, P1, rep from * to last 12 sts, K2tog, (P1, K1) five times.

2nd row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

3rd row: K1, P1, K1, cast off 2 sts, * P1, K1, rep from* to end of row.

4th row: Work in Moss Stitch to last 3 sts, cast on 2 sts, K1, P1, K1.

Work 3 rows in Moss Stitch.

8th row: (K1, P1) five times, * K2tog, P2tog, K1, P1, rep from* to last 11 sts, work 11 sts in Moss Stitch.

Work 4 rows in Moss Stitch.

13th row: Like 3rd row.

14th row: Like 4th row.

15th row: (K1, P1) four times, * K2tog, P2tog, K1, P1, rep from * to last 11 sts, K2tog, P2tog, work 7 sts in Moss Stitch.

Work 7 rows in Moss Stitch.

23rd row: Like 3rd row.

24th row: Like 4th row.

In next row: Work 14 sts in Moss Stitch, * P2tog, K1, P1, rep from * to last 15 sts, work 15 sts in Moss Stitch.

Cast off.

The Hood

Using No. 10 Needles, cast on 91 stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st row nine times.

Work as given from ** to ** for Cape fourteen times.

Proceed as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work in patt. to last 10 sts, turn,

3rd and 4th rows: Work in patt. to last 18 sts, turn.

5th and 6th rows: Work in patt. to last 26 sts, turn.

7th and 8th rows: Work in patt. to last 34 sts, turn.

9th and 10th rows: Work in patt. to last 42 sts, turn.

11th row: Work in patt. to end of row.

Cast off.

The Frilling

Using No. 14 Needles, cast on 7 stitches.

** 1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K2, P5.

3rd row: K5, turn, P5.

4th row: K6, turn, K1, P5.

5th row: P 5, K2.

6th row: Knit plain.

7th row: P5, turn, K5.

8th row: P5, K1, turn, K6. **

Rep. from ** to ** until work measures length required to fit around hood.

Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam sew up back seam of hood.

Sew hood to cape, commencing and ending 1 inch from each end of cape.

Using Crochet Hook, work a picot edging round face as follows:

1st row: 1 dc into each st

2nd row: * 4 ch, sl st back into 1st ch, 3 dc into next 3 dc, rep from * to end of row.

Sew frilling in position along hood at the commencement of pattern.

Embroider hood with grub roses.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Finally, press all seams.

The Frock

Materials and Size

18-19 inch underarm – 3 balls

Length from top of shoulder – 16½ ins.

Length of sleeve from underarm – 2½ ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos. 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Patons Crochet Hook UK No 12/2.75mm/US C-2

Floss for Embroidery.

Length of Ribbon.

Four Small Buttons.

Pattern

The Front

Using No. 10 Needles, cast on 141 stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st row seven times.

Proceed as follows:

** 1st row: K2, * K2tog, yo, knit into previous row of next st (this will now be termed “Knit Below” throughout), yo, K2tog tbl, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: Knit plain.

4th row: K1, purl to last st, K1. **

Rep. from ** to ** thirty-four times.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K5, * K2tog, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4. (75 sts).

2nd row: K1, * yo, K2tog, rep from * to end of row.

3rd row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

Rep. 3rd row five times.

9th and 10th rows: Cast off 3 sts. work in Moss Stitch to end of row.

Continue in Moss Stitch, dec once at each end of needle in next and every alt row until 61 sts remain.

Work 29 rows in Moss Stitch without shaping.

In next row: Moss Stitch 21, cast off 19, work to end of row.

Continue in Moss Stitch on last 21 sts, dec once at neck edge in every alt row twice.

Work 1 row without shaping.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 6 sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row.

3rd row: Work to last 12 sts, turn.

4th row: Like 2nd row. Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front.

The Sleeves

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 39 stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st row seven times.

9th row: K5, * inc once in next st, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4. (69 sts)

10th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Using No. 10 Needles, work as given from ** to ** for Front five times.

Keeping continuity of patt., dec once at each end of needle in every row until 27 sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew up shoulders for 1 inch.

Sew in sleeves placing seams to side seams.

Using Crochet Hook, work 1 row of dc along shoulder openings making 2 button loops on each front shoulder.

Work picot edging round neck as given for Cape and Hood.

Embroider front yoke with grub roses.

Sew on buttons to correspond with loops.

Thread ribbon through holes at waist Finally, press all seams.

The Booties

Materials and Size

Length of foot – 4 ins – 1 ball

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK No 10/3.25mm/US 3

Patons Crochet Hook UK No 12/2.75mm/US C-2

Floss for Embroidery.

Length of Ribbon.

Pattern

Cast on 41 stitches.

1st row: K1, inc once in next st, K17, inc once in next st, K1, inc once in next st, K17, inc once in next st, K1.

2nd and alt rows: Knit plain.

3rd row: K1, inc once in next st, K19, inc once in next st, K1, inc once in next st, K19, inc once in next st, K1.

5th row: K1, inc once in next st, K21, inc once in next st, K1, inc once in next st, K21, inc once in next st, K1.

7th row: K1, inc once in next st, K23, inc once in next st, K1, inc once in next st, K23, inc once in next st, K1.

9th row: K1, inc once in next st, K25, inc once in next st, K1, inc once in next st, K25, inc once in next st, K1.

11th row: K1, inc once in next st, K27, inc once in next st, K1, inc once in next st, K27, inc once in next st, K1. (65 sts)

12th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

13th row: Knit plain.

Rep. 12th and 13th rows twice, then 12th row once.

Shape instep thus:

1st row: K27, P11, P2tog, turn.

2nd row: Slip 1, (K1, P1) five times, K1, K2tog, turn.

3rd row: Slip 1, (K1, P1) five times, K1, P2tog, turn.

Rep. 2nd and 3rd rows until 39 sts remain on needles.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Slip 1, knit plain to end of row.

2nd row: K1, * yo, K2tog, rep from * to end of row.

3rd and 4th rows: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Work as given from ** to ** for Front of Frock five times, dec once at end of needle in last row.

1st row: K2, * P2, K2, rep from to end of row.

2nd row: K1, P1, * K2, P2, rep from * to last 4 sts, K2, P1, K1.

Rep. last 2 rows three times.

Cast off loosely in rib.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up foot and leg seams.

Thread ribbon through holes at ankle.

Embroider with grub roses. Finally, press all seams.

The Modesties (Soakers)

Materials and Size

Length at centre front – 8½ ins – 1 ball

Using Crochet Hook, work a picot edging round legs as given for Cape and Hood.

Thread ribbon through holes at top. Finally, press all seams

The Vest

Materials and Size

16 inch underarm – 1 ball

Length from top of shoulder – 11 inches.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos. 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Length of Ribbon.

Pattern

The Front

Using No. 10 Needles, cast on 66 stitches.

1st row: * K2, P2, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.

2nd row: K1, P1, * K2, P2, rep from * to last 4 sts, K2, P1, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows five times, inc once at end of needle in last row. (67 sts)

13th row: Knit plain.

14th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep 13th and 14th rows until work measures 7″ from commencement

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K22, (K2tog, yo, knit into previous row of next st [this will now be termed “Knit Below” throughout], yo, K2tog tbl, K1) four times, K21.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: Knit plain.

4th row: Like 2nd row.

Rep. last 4 rows twice.

The Neckband

Using a flat seam, sew up right shoulder seam.

With right side of work facing and using No. 12 Needles, knit up 97 sts evenly round neck.

1st row: Knit plain.

Rep. 1st row once.

3rd row: K1, * yo, K2tog, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row once. Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up left shoulder and side seams.

Using Crochet Hook work a picot edging round neck and armholes as given for Cape and Hood.

Embroider with grub roses.

Thread ribbon through holes at neck.

Finally, press all seams.
