Darling Baby Cardigan

Classic knit baby cardigan sweater

from Patons Knitting Book No. R21

Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Baby Wool or Patons Baby Wool with Nylon

Size A ­ 17 inch underarm, 2 balls

Size B ­ 19 inch underarm, 2 balls

Length from top of shoulder: Size A – 9 ins., Size B – 9½ ins.

Length of sleeve seam: Size A – 6 ins., Size B – 7 ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos. 10/3.25mm/US3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Four Small Buttons.

Tension

8 stitches to the inch in width, measured over plain smooth fabric.

Instructions are for smaller size A. Larger size B is shown thus [B-… ]

Pattern

The Right Front

Using smaller size needles, cast on 44 [B-50] stitches.

1st row: K6, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

2nd row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows twice [B-three times].

Next row: K2, yo, K2tog tbl, K2 (P1, K1) five [B-seven] times, P1, yo, P2 tog, rib to end of row.

Next row: As 2nd row.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows three [B-four] times.

Using larger size needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: K5 (yo, K2tog tbl) twice, knit to end of row.

2nd row: K1, purl to last 5 sts, K5.

3rd row: K6, yo, K2tog tbl, knit to end of row.

4th row: As 2nd row. **

Rep from ** to ** once [B-twice].

Next row: K2, yo, K2tog tbl, K1 (yo, K2tog tbl) twice, K8 [B-K12], yo, K2tog, knit to end of row.

Next row: As 2nd row of patt.

Next row: K6, yo, K2tog tbl, K1, K2tog tbl, knit to end of row.

Decrease once inside border sts as in last row in every following 4th row until 37 [B-43] sts remain.

Cast off 3 [B-5] sts at beg. of next row.

Dec once at armhole edge in next 5 rows, whilst at same time dec once inside border sts as before in every 4th row from previous dec until 21 [B-23] sts remain.

Work 8 [B-8] rows without shaping.

Cast off 8 [B-9] sts at beg of next and following alt row.

Work 12 [B-14] rows in garter stitch on remaining 5 sts Cast off.

The Left Front

Using smaller size needles, cast on 44 [B-50] stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep from * to last 6 sts, K6.

2nd row: K5, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows six [B-eight] times.

Using larger size needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: Knit to last 9 sts (K2tog, yo) twice, K5.

2nd row: K5, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: Knit to last 8 sts, K2tog, yo, K6.

4th row: As 2nd row. **

Rep from ** to ** once [B-twice], then rows 1-2 incl once.

Next row: Knit to last 11 sts, K2tog, K1, K2tog, yo, K6.

Work to correspond with Right Front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle.

The Back

Using smaller size needles, cast on 68 [B-76] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st row thirteen [B-seventeen] times.

Using larger size needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows seventeen [B-nineteen] times.

Cast off 3 [B-5] sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec once at each end of needle in every row until 52 [B-56] sts remain.

Continue in plain smooth fabric until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

Cast off 8 [B-9] sts at beg of next 4 rows.

Cast off remaining sts

The Sleeves

Using smaller size needles, cast on 36 [B-38] stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st row twelve [B-fourteen] times.

Next row: Rib 3, (inc once in next st, rib 5) five times, inc once in next st, rib to end of row. (42 [B-44] sts).

Using larger size needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in plain smooth fabric (stocking stitch), inc once at each end of needle in 9th [B-3rd] and every following 10th [B-8th] row until there are 48 [B-54] sts on needle.

Continue without shaping until side edge measures 6 [B-7] ins. from commencement.

Dec once at each end of needle in next and every alt row until 32 [B-34] sts remain, then in every row until 14 [B-16] sts remain.

Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves placing seams to side seams.

Using a flat seam join ends of front bands and sew in position across back of neck.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Finally, press all seams.
