Size

Lady’s medium: to fit a hand with a 20cm circumference.

Materials

Yarn: Approximately 115 metres of 8 ply yarn. If you want to use a different yarn for the cuffs, a single 50gm skein of any of the yarns mentioned above will be sufficient for the main part of the mitts.

Needles: A set of double pointed needles in sizes 3.25mm and 4mm

Tension

22sts to 10cm in stocking stitch on 4mm needles.

Abbreviations

m1 = make one stitch by putting your needle under the bar that lies between stitches, twist it (to avoid making a hole), and knit it.

Pattern

Using 3.25mm needles and the yarn you wish to use for the cuffs, cast on 44 sts and join for knitting in the round. Place a marker at the beginning of the round.

Work 5cm k1, p1 rib.

Change to 4mm needles and work in stocking st (knit every round) for 1cm.

Work thumb gusset as follows:

Knit one round plain

k20, m1, k3, m1, k23

Knit one round plain

k20, m1, k5, m1, k23

Knit one round plain

Continue increasing in this manner (working 2 more stitches between m1’s on every second round), until you reach k20, m1, k13, m1, k23

Next round: k20, put the next 15sts on a stitch holder or waste yarn, cast on 1 st, k to the end of the round.

Continue in stocking stitch on these 44 sts for 2cm.

Change to 3.25mm needles and work 2cm k1, p1 rib. Cast off in rib.

Work thumb as follows:

Using 3.25mm needles, slip the stitches from your st holder onto your working needles, then pick up 3sts at the point where you cast on 1st for the hand of the mitt after completing the thumb gusset. Place a marker for the beginning of the round.

1st round: Work p1, k1 ribbing to the last 4sts (note that you have started with a purl stitch!), p2tog, k1, remove end of round marker, p2tog, replace end of round marker.

Work 1cm k1, p1 rib. Cast off in rib.

Finishing

Darn in any loose ends, making sure to neaten any holes that may be visible near the base of the thumb ribbing.
