Twist A: K into the back of the 2nd st on the LH needle, then K into the front of the first st and sl both sts off needle tog
Twist B: K into the front of the 2nd st on LH needle, then into the front of the first st and sl both sts off needle tog
Twist C: P into the back of the 2nd st on the LH needle, then into the front of the first st and sl both sts off tog
Twist D: P into the front of the 2nd st on the LH needle, then into the front of the first st and sl both sts off tog
Materials
2 ounces 4-ply fingering wool,
1 pair each Nos 12 and 13 knitting needles (old UK sizes)
Size
To fit a size 6 ¾ to 7 ¾ hand
For a smaller size use Nos 13 (2.75mm) and 14 (2.5mm) knitting needles
Pattern
Right Hand Glove:
Using No 13 needles, cast on 58 sts and work for 2 ½ ins in K1, P1 rib, but K into the back of every K st This makes a firm and elastic rib
Note: The palms and fronts of the fingers are in reverse st-st (ie: right side P, wrong side K)
Change to No 12 needles and commence patt thus:
1st row: P1 (K5, P2) 4 times, P to end
2nd row: K 31 (P5, K2) 3 times, P5, K1
3rd row: P1, * twist A, K1 twist B, P2, rep from * 3 times ‘ P2, P twice into the next st, P to end
4th row: K 32, * twist C, P1 twist D, K2, rep from *, ending K1, instead of K2
5th row: P1, (K5, P2) 4 times, P twice into each of the next two sts, P to end
6th row: K 34, *P5, K2, rep from *, ending K1, instead of K2
7th row: P1, * twist A, K1, twist B, P2, rep from * 3 times, P to end
8th row: K 34, * twist C, P1, twist D, K2, rep from *, ending K1, instead of K2
9th Row: P1, (K5, P2) 4 times, P2, inc into the next st, P2, inc into the next st, P to end
Rep these last 4 rows (ie, 6th to 9th rows, inclusive) 5 times more. There will be 2 extra sts in thumb gusset after each rep. Allow for these when making next inc
Work 3 more rows in patt
Commence Thumb:
Work 48 sts, turn, K17 sts, cast on 3 sts, continue on these 20 sts in reverse st-st for 2 ins (or length required)
Shape top (rsf): * P1, P2tog, P 4, P2tog, P1, rep from *
2nd row: K
3rd row: * P1, P2tog, P2, P2tog, P1, rep from * Break off wool, thread through rem sts, and sew down seam of thumb
Pick up 3 sts from the base of thumb and P to end of row
Cont in patt on all sts for 1 ½ ins (or length required)
First Finger (rsf):
Patt 38 sts, turn
Patt 17 sts, turn
Cast on 3 sts, cont in patt on these 20 sts (scalloped rib is continued right down each finger) for 2 ¼ ins (or length required)
Shape top as follows (rsf): P1, P2tog, P1, patt 5 sts, P2tog (P2, P2tog) twice, P1
Next row: Work in patt Next row: P1, P2tog, K2, K2tog, K1, P2tog, P2, P2tog, P2 Break off wool and finish off as for thumb
Second Finger (rsf):
Pick up 3 sts from base of first finger, P7, turn
Patt 17 sts, turn, and cast on 3 sts
Proceed on these 20 sts for 2 1/2 ins (or length required) Shape top and finish off as for first finger
Third Finger (rsf):
Pick up 3 sts from base of second finger, P7, turn
Patt 17 sts, turn, and cast on 3 sts
Cont in patt on these 20 sts for 2 1/4 ins (or length required)
Shape top and finish off as for first finger
Fourth Finger (rsf):
Pick up 3 sts from base of third finger, P to end
Cont in patt on these 17 sts for 1 ¾ ins (or length required), then shape top as follows (RSF): P1, patt 5, P2tog (P2, P2tog) twice
Next row: Work in patt
Next row: K2tog, K1, K2tog, K1, P1, P2tog, P2, P2tog
Finish off and sew down seam of glove
Left Hand Glove:
Work exactly as for RH until ribbing is completed
1st Patt row: P 31 (K5, P2) 3 times, K5, P1
2nd row: K1 (P5, K2) 4 times, K to end
3rd row: P25, P2 into next st, P5, * twist A, K1, twist B, P2, rep from * 3 times, ending P1, instead of P2
4th Row: K1, * twist C, P1, twist D, K2, rep from * 3 times, then K to end
5th row: P25, P twice into each of the next 2 sts, work in patt to end
Cont in patt, inc 2 sts in thumb gusset every 4th row as for RH until there are 15 extra sts on needle
Work 3 more rows
Next row: P 42, turn and cast on 3 sts
Next row: K20, turn and cont on these 20 sts, work, and finish off as for RH thumb
Pick up 3 sts from base of thumb and cont in patt across all sts for 1 ½ ins (or length required)
First Finger (rsf):
Patt 38 sts, turn, cast on 3 sts, patt 20 sts, cont in patt on these 20 sts, work, and finish as for first finger RH, but when shaping at top read rows in reverse
Second Finger (rsf):
Pick up 3 sts from base of first finger, patt 7 sts, turn, cast on 3 sts, patt 20 sts, cont in patt on these 20 sts, and finish as for first finger
Third Finger (rsf):
Pick up 3 sts from base of second finger, patt 7 sts, turn, cast on 3 sts, patt 20 sts, cont on these 20 sts for required length, and finish as for first finger
Fourth Finger (rsf):
Pick up 3 sts from base of third finger, patt to end, cont in patt on these 17 sts for required length, and finish as for fourth finger RH, but reading rows in reverse
