Tray and Trolley Mats

Striped lace knit place mat or tray mat

Note: This pattern uses old UK size knitting needles.

Materials

Coats Mercer-Crochet No. 20 (20 gm): 4 balls White and 2 balls 508 (Lt. Marine Blue).
1 pair Knitting Needles No. 14.

The above quantity is sufficient to work both cloths.

Tension

10 sts = 1 in.

Measurements

Large Mat 16″ X 21″;
Small Mat 13″ X 18″
Note: Sts for the larger cloth are printed in brackets after those for the smaller size.

Pattern

Using White, cast on 291 (363) sts.

1st Row: K1, k twice into next st, k162 (198), k twice into next st, k1 – this is the corner st and should be marked with a contrasting cotton, k twice into next st, k122 (158), k twice into next st, k1.

2nd Row: P1, p twice into next st, p to within one st from corner st, p twice into next st, p the corner st, p twice into next st, p to last 2 sts, p twice into next st, p1.

3rd Row: K1, k twice into next st, k to within one st from corner st, k twice into next st, k the corner st, k twice into next st, k to last 2 sts, k twice into next st, k1.

Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows twice and the 2nd row once more.

9th Row: K1, * yo, k2tog; repeat from * to end.

10th Row: P.

11th Row: K1, k2tog, k to within 2 sts from corner st, k2tog, k corner st, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

12th Row: P1, p2tog, p to within 2 sts from corner st, p2tog, p corner st, p2tog, p to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1.

Repeat the 11th and 12th rows 3 times more. (291 (363)) sts.

** Break off White and join Blue.

19th Row: As 11th row.

20th Row: As 12th row.

21st Row: As 9th row.

22nd Row: As 12th row.

23rd Row: As 9th row.

24th Row: As 12th row. Break off Blue and join White.

25th Row: As 11th row.

26th Row: As 12th row.

27th Row: As 11th row.

28th Row: P.

29th Row: As 11th row.

30th Row: As 12th row.

Repeat from ** 5 (7) times more. Repeat 19th to 26th row once more. (51 sts).

Next Row: K1, k2tog, k to within 2 sts from corner st, k2tog, k corner st, (k2tog) twice.

Next Row: P.

Next Row: K1, k2tog, k to within 2 sts from corner st, k2tog, k corner st, k2tog (44sts).

Next Row: P2, p2tog, p to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1.

Break off White and join Blue.

Next Row: K1, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, k2tog, k 2.

Next Row: (P2tog) twice, p to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1. Leave these sts on a spare needle.

Work a second piece in same way. Placing 2 fabrics together, right side inwards, cast off a st from each group together, repeating this across row. Press work with warm iron and damp cloth. Join 2 corner seams, taking care to use matching cotton for each stripe. Turn outer hem, making neat ‘mitred’ corners underneath, at seams. Press again.
