1 set Double Pointed Knitting Needles No.14. (2mm)

12 sts = 1 in. measured over st st

Centrepiece-11″ in diameter; Small Mat-7″ in diameter.
Pattern
CENTREPIECE
Using double cotton, cast on 200 sts, 68 on each of 2 needles and 64 on third needle, making sure that the cast on edge is flexible whilst being even and firm. Break off 1 strand. Work in stocking stitch for 6 rows. Cast off.
With smooth side of stocking stitch towards you, pick up 200 sts round cast off row, 68 on each of 2 needles and 64 on third needle.
Next Row: K.
Next Row: K, winding cotton round needle 5 times for every st.
Next Row: K, allowing each group of 5 sts to slide into 1 long loop.
Next Row: * K3, k2tog; repeat from * all round.
Next Row: K.
Next Row: K.
Cast off.
With smooth side of stocking stitch towards you. pick up 160 sts along cast-off row, 56 sts on each of 2 needles. and 48 sts on third needle.
Next Row: K.
Next Row: K, winding cotton round needle 4 times for each st.
Next Row: K, allowing each group of 4 sts to slide into 1 long loop.
Next Row: * K2, K2tog; repeat from * all round,
Next Row: K.

** With smooth side of stocking stitch towards you, pick up 120 sts round cast-off edge, 40 sts on each of 3 needles.

Next Row: K, winding cotton 3 times round needle for each st.
Next Row: K, allowing each group of 3 sts to slide into 1 long loop.
Next Row: * K1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round.
Next Row: K.
Next Row: K. Cast off.
With smooth side of stocking stitch towards you, pick up 80 sts round cast off row, 28 sts on each of 2 needles and 24 sts on third needle.
Next Row: K.
Next Row: * K3, k2tog; repeat from * all round.
Next Row: K.
Next Row: * K2, k2tog; repeat from all round.
Next Row: K.
Next Row: * K1, k2tog; repeat from * all round.

Cut cotton 12 inches from fabric. Thread this end through remaining sts. Pull up very tightly and secure. Fasten off very securely before cutting.
Press mat with a hot iron and damp cloth, pulling out the ‘long’ sts as far as they will extend, and so that they are evenly set. Cut cotton into 3 in. lengths and knot these, 2 at a time, through each st of cast-on row. Press mat again, straightening fringe. Trim fringe to 1 in.
SMALL MAT (Make 2)
Using double cotton, cast on 120 sts, 40 on each of three needles, taking care that cast-on row is flexible whilst being firm and even.
Break off 1 strand.
Work 6 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off.
Now work as for centrepiece from **. Finish mat in same way as for centrepiece.
