This is a great pattern for a beginner. It is made up of chaining and slip stitching, two of the most basic crocheting skills.Chaining takes you to or between points and slip stitching attaches elements together.

You can make it wider by adding any multiple of 3 chains to the initial chain.

It’s nice to use a yarn that gradates or changes color such as the Mini Mochi plus I used. Malbrigo , Taos , or Noro -( Kuryon or silk garden) would also be good choices.

In the border fringe depicted I experimented with different elements - such as leaf shapes and bobbles as well as curlyQ’s. One could also simply add a basic fringe.

I found Nicky Epstein’s book “Crocheting on the Edge” - wonderfully inspiring !
